The study focused on the level of writing of BSE English Major Students of CBSUA-Main Campus. Specifically, the objectives of the study were pursued: (1) What is the socio-demographic profile of BSE English Major Students of CBSUA-CDE SY 2016-2017?; (2) What is the skill level of BSE English Major students in writing in terms of: Content, Organization, Vocabulary, Language Use, and Mechanics; (3) Which aspects of writing of BSE English Major students are strong?; (4) Which aspects of writing of BSE English Major students are weak?; (5) What English Instructional Module in Writing can be developed?
Purposive sampling and Total Enumeration were utilized on the choice of respondents.
Descriptive method was used in the conduct of the study. It was utilized to determine the writing skill level of BSE English Majors as well as in determining the aspect of writing which they are strong and weak. Descriptive-developmental was used in the development of the English writing module that would respond to their writing needs.
The respondents of the study were the BSE 2nd, 3rd and 4th year English major students of Central Bicol State University of Agriculture – College of Development Education. There are 162 English Major Students who are officially enrolled in this university for the school year 2016-2017. The test questionnaire was used in order to determine the level of writing skill and their strong and weak aspects in writing based on the overall percentage of their responses.
The result of this study showed that majority of the BSE English Majors are females with 132 respondents having 81.48% of the total population, most of the respondents are 18-19 years old with 101 numbers of the total respondents and is equal to 62.35% of the population, no. of siblings both 3 and 4 with 32 respondents and having 19.8% of which, there are 52 respondents that are first born child and that is equivalent to 32.10% of the total population, whose mothers are housewife 56.79 and high school graduate 43.68, whose fathers are self-employed having 92 respondents with 74.07% and high school graduate having 72 respondents with 43.68%, and parents monthly salary ranges from P6,000-10,000 and almost 43.21 of the population. The skill level of BSE-English Major Students in writing, from 2nd year to 4th year, is ‘Good’ (G) for garnering a grand mean of 3.07 that falls in the range of 2.5 – 3.24. The aspect of writing of BSE-English Major Students is strong in the ‘Organization’ aspect with a composite mean of 3.24. The aspect of writing of BSE-English Major Students is weak in terms of ‘Mechanics’ with a composite mean of 2.76. An English Instructional Module in Writing was developed to further enhance the writing skills of the students.
